Information about Arta in Mallorca
A jewel in the north east: Artà
The artistic little town of Artà is embedded into a multifaced landscape. The area has many artistic places with high cliffs, a prosperous valley with almond, fig, and carob trees as well as eight mountains of mid height. In the surrounding, there is the nature reserve Parque Natural de Llevant, which is a home for many different bird species due to its richness in water and trees. Recommendable are also the fine sandy beaches without any huge hotels and several small bays.
A place with history
As soon as Artà comes up at the horizon, all visitors are being welcomed with a view as if it would be painted: At the end of the stony hill, the 182 metres high Puig de Sant Salvador, is a gothic church located. Above this, the pilgrimage church of Santuari de Sant Salvador, the landmark of the village, can be found. 180 calvary steps and five large crosses connect the two houses of god from the 16th and the 19th century. Also the old fortress wall with nine high towers matches perfectly to the picture. From up here you can enjoy a wonderful view on the probably most beautiful village in the northeast of Majorca.
View over Arta
The old town of Artà should not be missed: a historic little village with little alleys, wonderful houses, art nouveau villas and special buildings like the old closed central station, where a wonderful art exhibition is situated today. Also the culture house Na Batlessa, the town hall or the city museum should be visited – all of this reflects today the wealth of the families in Artá, who made their fortune on the American continent in the second half of the 19th century.
In front of the village houses with fondly renovated apartments, old majorcan women are sweeping the street, the visitor feels like in a time 100 hundred years ago, if there would not be a car crossing his path from time to time. Behind the high walls, hidden from the public eye, there are enchanting villas and palaces in the middle of the city, with park like gardens, stone witnesses of the Spanish nobility who lived here.In the surrounding area, real estate agents offer charming landscapes and fincas.
Special boutiques
Who is taking his holiday in Artà does not have to go to Palma for shopping. The place is also known for its tasteful little shops, which string together like pearls. In ArtArtà,
At Pep from Can Cabrer you get the delicious Flor de Sal salts and across at the coffee shop La Bicicletta delicious ice cream. Pedra y Flor is one of the nicest decoration shops with self-made mobiles out of things from the beach, DOMUSart is well known for the special furniture, decoration and art. At Georgs, you find good wines and balsamic vinegars, at Ciutat 37 nice fashion and absolutely exceptional jewellery in the Galerie Bocaroja.
Im ArtArtá they are specialised on the inventive presentation of carftwork (like braided baskets) and the cultural heritage of Arta. Worth seeing is also the exhibition of the huge papier-mâché figures.
Nice coffee ships and good restaurants
In Artà shopping is real fun. Just the decision in which of the nice coffee shops you will drink your “café con leche” will be hard. Especially nice and romantic is the Café Parisienne, but also the El Dorado offers very good coffee, the Mar de Vins has also a very good kitchen and a beautiful Patio.
These are only a few examples, which you can find in the traffic-free centre. For a romantic dinner the La Calatrava in the parallel street, is a culinary oasis with a fountain and a huge patio.
Dance and contemplation
During the week, Artà is a pretty calm place, but not whilst the market takes place on Tuesday, because this weekly market seems to be one of the nicest ones on the whole island and therefore attracts a lot of visitors. Every first Sunday of the month, an original flee market takes place at the village square. There is also a lot going on in the first week of August, when the patron Sant Salvador is being celebrated. The fact that dancing is an important thing in Artà, is proven by the dancing iron devil at the entrance of the town.
Those of you who seeking tranquillity, can find it at Ermita de Betlém, which is hosting still today many monks (the youngest one is already older than 80). Close by is the spring Sa Font with a sainthood of Mary delivering fresh water. There are not only nice possibilities to hike but the area around Artà is also great for cyclists. There are also three golf courts around.
